A strong spell is only useful if you can afford the next cast.

Editorial review: 2026-10-28. Official release announcements take precedence. Community sources can lag the live client. Source review is not in-game testing. Class tiers, build priorities and planning methods are editorial advice, not measured optimal builds or guaranteed leveling rates.

## At a glance

- **Main stat:** INT

- **First job:** Level 10 · Ellinia

- **Instructor:** Grendel the Really Old

- **Next choice:** Cleric / I/L / F/P

## Use the Classic World starting point

The Classic World class reference puts Magician advancement at level 10 in Ellinia, alongside the other first jobs. Some older SP explainers still use level 8. Do not subtract two levels from this route or copy an old Magician point total. INT is the main stat, with wands and staves as your weapons.

> Treat your live skill window as the point-budget authority. This guide deliberately does not promise an unverified 67-SP or 61-SP total.

- [MapleClassic Wiki: Magician](https://mapleclassic.wiki/wiki/Magician): Community class table; first job at level 10. Some older general SP pages still say level 8.

- [MapleClassic Wiki: Skill points](https://mapleclassic.wiki/wiki/Skill_points): Contains an older level-8 Magician example that conflicts with current class pages. We do not use it to calculate an automatic SP budget.

## Keep AP tied to an actual upgrade

Use the next weapon you can realistically acquire as your equipment constraint. Compare its stat requirements against permanent stats and equipment separately. A theoretical low-secondary-stat build is not useful if it leaves you unable to equip the affordable weapon you found.

When comparing equipment, test the same monsters before and after the upgrade. Count casts per kill and include the last weak cast. If an upgrade changes nothing about that count, save the mesos until the next meaningful breakpoint. Keep recovery items funded before experimenting with expensive gear.

## A flexible first-job skill order

| Decision | Unlock / priority | How to judge it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Core attack | Energy Bolt 1 → Magic Claw | Use a reliable attack before spreading points across every spell. |
| Damage investment | Develop your chosen attack | Compare casts per kill with MP spent, not the largest damage number. |
| Recovery route | Improved MP Recovery 3 → Max MP Increase | Review passive value and item recovery against your downtime. |
| Survival | Magic Guard, then consider Magic Armor | Magic Armor requires Magic Guard 3 in the referenced table. |
| Before level 30 | Review unused first-job SP | Use the live client to resolve any tier restrictions before advancing. |

> Magic Guard redirects part of incoming damage to MP. An empty MP bar is also a survival problem, so monitor both bars.

## Why your training spot can bankrupt you

A crowded map can look ideal because its monsters are worth more EXP, yet force constant movement, extra casts and contact damage. Include every recovery item used in a full session. If your mesos fall each time, the route has a limited runway even if its EXP is good.

Start a second test on weaker targets with the same buff and potion rules. If the weaker map lets you sustain the session without a shopping trip, it may win over an hour. Never extrapolate one lucky drop into a guaranteed farming income.

- Keep emergency recovery on a comfortable key.

- Refill before a party run instead of hoping a party member covers a shortage.

- Use the economy budget tool to separate guaranteed costs from speculative sales.

## Choose the second job by the loop you enjoy

At level 30, the three branches are Cleric, Ice/Lightning Wizard and Fire/Poison Wizard. Cleric centers on healing and undead encounters; I/L offers ice control and lightning attacks; F/P uses fire and poison. These are different play patterns, not a universal best-class ranking.

- Choose Cleric if coordinating with a party is part of the appeal.

- Choose I/L if you enjoy testing grouping and control against map layout.

- Look at the available training maps before committing to an element.

- Read the two linked second-job guides for a more detailed transition plan.

## AP allocation: a practical next-level plan

Use INT as your main stat and check the requirements on a usable wand or staff. LUK is a common secondary-stat constraint, not a universal fixed ratio. Check every requirement on the actual item before spending.

The five-point example below is arithmetic, not a claim that a particular item has these requirements. Count only equipment bonuses you will still have after changing gear; do not depend on a temporary buff without checking the live equip rules.

| Situation | Example allocation | Decision |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Requirements already met | 5 INT | If the next usable item’s requirements are met, put the example level’s points into the main stat. |
| Example: 2 LUK short | 2 LUK + 3 INT | Cover the verified shortfall first, then use the remaining points on your main stat. |
| More than 5 points short | Up to 5 LUK, 0 INT in this example | Recheck the item and budget; bridge the remainder over later levels or keep your current gear. |
| Frequent misses | Recheck accuracy before committing permanent points | Test weaker targets and gear options; an equipment requirement is not the only concern. |

> This is an equipment-driven editorial example, not a fixed ratio, reset guarantee, or recommendation to spend permanently on an unverified item.

## SP allocation and skill priority

Follow these priorities in order as the relevant skills unlock. A suggested first point is conditional on having an available point in the correct job pool and meeting the current client’s prerequisites; it does not mean every skill is immediately unlocked.

The order is an editorial starting plan, not a tested optimal level-by-level build. Check ranks, costs and the live skill window before each permanent allocation.

| Priority | Suggested allocation | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Open the route | Energy Bolt 1, then Magic Claw 1 when unlocked | Test a repeatable spell rotation. |
| Main attack | Develop Magic Claw for the current route | Watch casts per enemy and MP spent. |
| Protection | Consider Magic Guard and recovery after checking unlocks | Add protection when contact or resupply interrupts training. |

- [MapleClassic Wiki: Magician](https://mapleclassic.wiki/wiki/Magician): Community class table; first job at level 10. Some older general SP pages still say level 8.

- [MapleStory Quest: Grand Launch skill diff](https://maplestory.quest/changelog?s=skills): Grand Launch view checked 23 October 2026: twelve revised skills, including recovery, Final Attack duration and Dark Sight prerequisites. The default view may advance after future updates.

## First-week route: early to mid game

These are progression stages, not a promise that every player reaches a given level within one week. Use the first-week and leveling guides for route and session-planning details.

| Stage | What to do | Check before moving on |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Levels 1–10 | Finish the beginner route and travel to your branch instructor. | Check the current advancement requirements in the client. |
| Levels 10–29 | After advancement, practice a short spell loop and track MP consumption. | Compare nearby fields with mushroom or boar routes and, if eligible, KPQ from level 21. |
| Level 30 decision | Compare affordable maps; prepare the Cleric, Ice/Lightning or Fire/Poison choice. | Read the second-job guide and recheck the skill prerequisites. |

- [MapleStory Quest: launch class roster](https://maplestory.quest/classes): Checked 23 October 2026. Community client-data reference separates ten launch second jobs from historical CoT2 third jobs; it does not provide our tier placements.

- [MapleStory Quest: Leveling planner](https://maplestory.quest/leveling): Game-file based monster and map reference. Its EXP/HP ranking is theoretical, not your observed EXP per hour.

- [Metaroad: KPQ walkthrough](https://metaroad.gg/maplestory-classic/party-quests/maplestory-classic-world-kerning-city-party-quest-kpq-guide): Updated October 21; explicitly distinguishes test changes. Four players, level 21+, thirty-minute run.

## Gear and spending checkpoints

| Checkpoint | Action | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Weapon | Choose an affordable wand or staff and budget for ordinary MP recovery. | Choose an obtainable upgrade that matches your actual skills. |
| Requirements | Check all stats, level and usable equipment bonuses on the target item. | A higher listed attack is irrelevant if you cannot equip it. |
| Session budget | Keep recovery and any ammunition or throwing stars for a full run. | Compare session cost and uptime, not an unverified market price. |
