Control a single threat, or turn a good grouping into faster clears.

Editorial review: 2026-10-28. Official release announcements take precedence. Community sources can lag the live client. Source review is not in-game testing. Class tiers, build priorities and planning methods are editorial advice, not measured optimal builds or guaranteed leveling rates.

## At a glance

- **Branch:** Magician → I/L Wizard

- **Advancement:** Level 30 · Ellinia

- **Core choice:** Single target / group

- **Budget watch:** MP per cleared pack

## Choose a spell for a map you can use

Ice/Lightning Wizard is a Magician second-job choice at level 30. The class reference lists Cold Beam and Thunder Bolt, with INT as the main stat. Its control and area attacks invite different map layouts; the choice deserves a real test rather than a universal “max this first” claim.

Think about the maps you can actually occupy at your usual play time. A theoretically strong group attack has little value when monsters are scattered across platforms or other players clear each pack first. Start with access and resources, then choose the next investment.

- [MapleClassic Wiki: Ice/Lightning Wizard](https://mapleclassic.wiki/wiki/Ice/Lightning_Wizard): Community second-job reference, labelled pre-launch.

## Two investment directions

| Direction | When it fits | What can make it fail |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Cold Beam emphasis | Targets are separated; control improves safety | Resistance, weak target selection or too much travel. |
| Thunder Bolt emphasis | You can gather several suitable enemies consistently | Long grouping time, empty spawns or MP costs you cannot fund. |
| Supporting skills | A main attack already gives a stable loop | Spreading points so widely that no attack becomes useful. |

> Read current prerequisites and elemental behavior in-game. The linked community references remain labelled pre-launch; this is a decision framework, not a verified optimal damage simulation.

## Compare a full pack, not one damage number

Count the time from the first movement toward a group until the last useful enemy is cleared. Include the setup, extra casts, recovery and repositioning. Repeat across several groups. If one target keeps surviving, note whether chasing it is worth delaying the next pack.

Run the same map for ten minutes with a consistent looting rule. Record total EXP and total spending. Next, test a different layout. Prefer the route you can repeat while remaining solvent; an impressive burst that empties your inventory before the session ends is not a sustainable training plan.

- Do not count enemies another player kills as your spell’s result.

- Reset the comparison when equipment, skill ranks or party buffs change.

- Include travel to a remote map in your session, especially for short play windows.

## AP and gear without a speculative shopping list

Keep INT as the branch focus and inspect each equipment requirement before allocating secondary stats. Set a maximum shopping budget after reserving recovery items. Test a new weapon on your usual monsters so you can see whether it changes casts per kill.

A lower-priced upgrade that reaches the next useful breakpoint can be more practical than a premium item with unused surplus damage. Keep a short record of old and new clear times. If the route is limited by spawn or movement, extra attack will not solve that bottleneck.

## In a party, make your area predictable

Tell teammates which platform or group you will cover. Avoid pulling enemies into someone who is recovering or completing an interaction. Coordinate the first pull, then keep the pattern stable so the group can learn it.

After a few runs, compare the party session with your solo baseline including waiting time. A good group may be worthwhile for consistency and enjoyment even when the hourly EXP is similar. Treat that as a deliberate choice. The calculator can compare time; it cannot decide which company you enjoy.

## AP allocation: a practical next-level plan

Use INT as your main stat and check the requirements on a wand or staff. LUK is a common secondary-stat constraint, not a universal fixed ratio. Check every requirement on the actual item before spending.

The five-point example below is arithmetic, not a claim that a particular item has these requirements. Count only equipment bonuses you will still have after changing gear; do not depend on a temporary buff without checking the live equip rules.

| Situation | Example allocation | Decision |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Requirements already met | 5 INT | If the next usable item’s requirements are met, put the example level’s points into the main stat. |
| Example: 2 LUK short | 2 LUK + 3 INT | Cover the verified shortfall first, then use the remaining points on your main stat. |
| More than 5 points short | Up to 5 LUK, 0 INT in this example | Recheck the item and budget; bridge the remainder over later levels or keep your current gear. |
| Frequent misses | Recheck accuracy before committing permanent points | Test weaker targets and gear options; an equipment requirement is not the only concern. |

> This is an equipment-driven editorial example, not a fixed ratio, reset guarantee, or recommendation to spend permanently on an unverified item.

## SP allocation and skill priority

Follow these priorities in order as the relevant skills unlock. A suggested first point is conditional on having an available point in the correct job pool and meeting the current client’s prerequisites; it does not mean every skill is immediately unlocked.

The order is an editorial starting plan, not a tested optimal level-by-level build. Check ranks, costs and the live skill window before each permanent allocation.

| Priority | Suggested allocation | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Group attack | Take Thunder Bolt 1 when available, then develop it for packs | Use it where grouped targets justify the MP. |
| Single targets | Take Cold Beam 1 when available and test it | Compare targets and resistance before adding ranks. |
| Utility | Add Teleport and Meditation after their live prerequisites | Balance mobility and party support against MP needs. |

## First-week route: early to mid game

These are progression stages, not a promise that every player reaches a given level within one week. Use the first-week and leveling guides for route and session-planning details.

| Stage | What to do | Check before moving on |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Levels 1–10 | Finish the beginner route and travel to your branch instructor. | Check the current advancement requirements in the client. |
| Levels 10–29 | Use the Magician foundation and keep an MP reserve through advancement. | Compare nearby fields with mushroom or boar routes and, if eligible, KPQ from level 21. |
| Levels 30–39 | After level 30, test Thunder Bolt on groups and Cold Beam on suitable individual targets. | Read the second-job guide and recheck the skill prerequisites. |
| Levels 40–70 | Retest a familiar Victoria Island route against tougher local targets as your skills improve. | Compare attacks per kill, travel and recovery over a full session before moving. |

- [MapleStory Quest: launch class roster](https://maplestory.quest/classes): Checked 23 October 2026. Community client-data reference separates ten launch second jobs from historical CoT2 third jobs; it does not provide our tier placements.

- [MapleStory Quest: Leveling planner](https://maplestory.quest/leveling): Game-file based monster and map reference. Its EXP/HP ranking is theoretical, not your observed EXP per hour.

- [Metaroad: KPQ walkthrough](https://metaroad.gg/maplestory-classic/party-quests/maplestory-classic-world-kerning-city-party-quest-kpq-guide): Updated October 21; explicitly distinguishes test changes. Four players, level 21+, thirty-minute run.

## Gear and spending checkpoints

| Checkpoint | Action | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Weapon | Use an affordable wand or staff; leave room for MP and movement. | Choose an obtainable upgrade that matches your actual skills. |
| Requirements | Check all stats, level and usable equipment bonuses on the target item. | A higher listed attack is irrelevant if you cannot equip it. |
| Session budget | Keep recovery and any ammunition or throwing stars for a full run. | Compare session cost and uptime, not an unverified market price. |
